After visiting the Google office in New York City, I was told to visit Los Tacos No 1. One of the more popular taco spots in New York City is Los Tacos No. 1 in Chelsea Market. The market itself itself reminds me of Diagon Alley in Harry Potter World at Universal. After walking through the historic New York building, you’ll find a line for some pretty damn good New York Tacos. The line will move quickly, the staff and cooks are very efficient. Pro Tip: before you get online run across and grab a boozy milkshake from Creamline, as you can expect, it’s a milkshake with alcohol, Kaluha is always a good choice. Milkshake in hand, look at the menu for Los Tacos No. 1 and you’ll see 4 taco options: Pollo Asado (grilled chicken), Bistec (steak), Nopal (cactus), and Adobada (marinated pork, a similar version of Tacos al Pastor)
Being well known and talked about in Netflix shows like Aziz Ansari’s Master of None, multiple print and online publications, a line is expected most hours of the day but the wait really is never that bad. Always go with the corn tortilla option, I repeat always go with the corn taco, they make it fresh, peak behind the grill and you’ll see them in action. Yes there’s nothing wrong with flour option but for a more authentic experience skip the flour tortillas. After ordering take your receipt and hand it to the cook down the line and he’ll build it quick to you’re liking. Second rule grab a lime at the end. I usually will go with their mild sauce for my toppings. A table in Chelsea Market will be hard to find at peak hours so good luck on that front. Watch it being made here on our Instagram.
- Solid Taco Review Score: 9.1/10
- Taco Price: $3.75 each for steak, $3.50 for other varieties
- Location: New York, New York (Inside Chelsea Market 75 9th Ave)
- Strengths: Freshly made tortillas , near other great food spots
- Other Things to Try: The quesadilla is another great option but it’s very similar to the tacos with exception of cheese. Try the doughnuttery in Chelsea market for dessert.
What did I have?
Pollo Asado – (grilled chicken) the freshly made corn tortillas here lay the foundation for one amazing taco. The chicken is well cooked and seasoned, but can sometimes be over cooked.
Bistec – (grilled steak) a really good steak taco and it’s my go to here, its seasoned well, and cooked on the well done side, which is pretty standard as far as steak for a taco goes. *I prefer medium well*
Does Los Tacos No. 1 live up to the hype?
Yes and No. They are pretty damn good and made fresh to order the meat is excellent, but I still feel there is something missing. I have yet to have a tortilla this good, the meat itself could be a little better in consistency, it can be a little dry from time to time and the lack of variety leaves you wanting more especially when the quesadilla is very similar to the tacos. If you’re in Chelsea Market or visiting New York, yes stop and grab one of these tacos they are very very good.
